Ida Bell Robinson, Part 2

Continued from Part 1
Ida’s Preaching Style

Prayer was paramount in Ida B. Robinson's meetings, and every meeting would begin with everyone present joining her in prayer for about an hour and a half.  This time of prayer would be followed by testimonies and the offering. Next came a musical group, and then Ida. Ida would often step up to the pulpit shouting, and that shouting could continue for up to ten minutes.

When Ida was ready to preach, she would have someone read the Bible verses for her sermon.  Some believed that she might have had issues with reading (perhaps something akin to dyslexia).  Ida did have a fantastic memory when it came to Scriptures, and she could quote verses from memory at length during her sermons. As soon as the Scriptures were read, Ida would launch into her sermon with every fiber of her being.

Ida B. Robinson: Preacher, Visionary, Leader

Ida Robinson was the founder of the Mount Sinai Holy Church of America, Inc. This is a Pentecostal denomination started in 1924 that continues to this day. She felt led of the Lord to start an organization where women preachers and leaders felt welcome and accepted. She accomplished this during a time when there were not many women preachers, and they only other denomination in the US that had been founded by a woman at that time was the Foursquare Church (by Aimee Semple McPherson the year before). Unlike Aimee, Ida was African-American; this meant an entirely different set of challenges had to be faced.

The Great Fire of Chicago began about 9 pm Sunday, October 8, until early Tuesday, October 10, 1871.  This rapidly spreading fire killed approximately 300 individuals, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles Chicago, and left over 100,000 residents homeless.  This devastating fire would greatly impact the life of American evangelist D.L. Moody.

Can Prayer Change God's Mind?

5/2/2016

One of my favorite Christian authors is W.T. Purkiser.  The following article was inspired by a portion of his book, Give me an Answer.

There are two ways we can interpret this question. The first would be asking if prayer can cause God to do something He has no intention of doing. In that case, the answer would be "No."

However, if we are asking if its possible for things to happen in answer to prayer which would not occur any other way, then the answer is a resounding "Yes!"

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  2 Chronicles 7:14

Things can happen, as an answer to prayer, that would not happen if someone didn't pray. Consider Abraham and the impending destruction of Sodom. If Abraham had not prayed, Lot would have perished with the rest of Sodom, plain and simple. That's a sobering thought, isn't it?

W.T. Purkiser expands on this by pointing out that God has chosen to make us partners in his work, and our obedience and prayers make a real difference. Our failure to pray can have a negative impact on the kingdom of God. That's why it is so vital that God's people pray!

So, can prayer change God's mind? It can cause things to take place that would never have taken place if we hadn't prayed.

Fitting In and Settling In
Once the Lammermuir party landed and the missionary party found a place to stay, they immediately adopted the ways of the Chinese they would be ministering among.  This included a diet consisting of a great deal of rice, and the difficult task of mastering chopsticks.  They also adopted Chinese dress, which caused quite a stir among other Europeans.

At a young age, Emily Blatchely became an orphan.  Her parents had entrusted her to the care of missionaries Hudson and Maria Taylor, founders of the China Inland Mission.  As she grew into her twenties, she became the governess for the Hudson family and graduated from the Home and Colonial Training College.  She would become a key part of the China Inland Mission before her life was cut tragically short.  This is the first part of her story.

Preaching Against Sin

Jeremiah 5:31
The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

According to the Life in the Spirit Study Bible notes, there are two majors issues described here.  The first is prophets who prophesy a message of their own making, and priests who rule not by the word of God but by their own ideas.  This scripture can be applied to the modern church, but maybe not in the way that we think.  I'm concerned that our preaching against sin hasn't necessarily been the sin that is weakening the church, and we have allowed our ideas of sin to be molded by a force outside of God.

It's easy to decry the evils of homosexuality and fornication in a congregation that agrees with us.  It's easy for us to huddle in our little group of like-minded people and point to the gays and the feminists, blaming them for the condition of our world.  But you know what?  It's not sinners that weaken the church's power and influence, but rather lukewarm Christians.
